"My task, which I am trying to achieve, is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel -- it is, before all, to make you see. That -- and no more, and it is everything." -- Joseph Conrad

Dialoguing with Mystery

Posted: September 19th, 2010 @ 9:03pm

Next week marks the arrival of the Autumn Equinox; on September 23rd, the hours of daylight and darkness will be in perfect balance.  From then on, as we move into the season of Fall, night becomes longer than day.

Some astrologers and scientists believe that during the Equinox the solar affect produces a reduction in the magnetic field of the Earth, providing easier access to other realms – namely, those of the subconscious and/or the Dreamtime.  Because it is out of that dark and mysterious womb that wisdom is born, we are encouraged to take advantage of this sacred time and what it might have to offer us.

Jung described the individuation process as the struggle to produce what he referred to as the “true personality.”  This daunting journey (that we all eventually set out on!) involves bridging the gap between the treasures of the archetypal world of the unconscious and the everyday world of ego-consciousness, in an attempt to actualize the more magnanimous potential of the psyche.

Sometimes the call of the individuation process takes the form of a crisis in the external world -- a financial failure, a health problem, a broken relationship, a career change, or something else that upsets the status quo. Other times the call manifests as profound self-doubt, a loss of meaning, a questioning of purpose, or a deep, indescribable yearning.   Whatever the catalyst, though, something important is at hand.

And so begins the hero’s journey.  As Jungian analyst James Hollis points out, collective acceptance is threatened during this process since the “Truth” that we discover in the Underworld often lies in direct opposition to the rules of mundane reality.  The good news, though, is that there is redemption if we stay the course; Hollis maintains that we are repaid by bringing “a larger person back to the world, to our relationships, and to our dialogue with mystery.”

I love the idea of “dialoguing” with the more enigmatic realm.  There is something incredibly freeing about the fact that there is no “authority” there -- no absolute, no “right” or “wrong.”  Of course, this lack of “knowableness” is precisely what makes the numinous so scary.  Yet and still, I urge you to heed the call of mystery, particularly if you hear it louder with the coming season.

Rob Brezsny says, "Somewhere there's a treasure that has no value to anyone but you, and a secret that's meaningless to everyone except you, and a frontier that harbors a revelation only you could exploit.  Why not go in search of those things?"

Blessings on your seach.
