"My task, which I am trying to achieve, is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel -- it is, before all, to make you see. That -- and no more, and it is everything." -- Joseph Conrad

Mystical Maturity and Intuition

Posted: July 16th, 2010 @ 7:33pm

So here we are in the seventh month of the year...and, in numerology, 7 is a highly-charged number.  In fact, it is sometimes known as "the number of the Universe."  Consider, for a moment, how 7 is represented -- there are 7 wonders of the world, 7 pillars of wisdom, 7 days of the week, 7 musical notes, 7 rays of the sun...and on and on.  The point, more largely, is that 7 has a particularly sacred vibration.

The number 7 is said to represent mystical maturity, introspection, and inner searching.  It is considered to be the number of intuition, giving us access to that place beyond reason and logic where we can divine our truest nature.

Last month I suggested that we spend some time stoking the "inner fire" of Consciousness since, what we sow internally, we reap externally.  July seems a fitting time to pick up where we left off; why not devote some time this month to furthering the process of intuitive development?  After all, the energy of the 7 is largely about distinguishing between illusion and reality, and sometimes, when the ego gets in the way, that process of discernment proves difficult.

Wisdom and intuitive development depend on having faith in ourselves and our divine heritage.  Unfortunately, what often happens is that we get "indoctrinated" into a way of being (via early programming etc.) that is out-of-sync with our most authentic nature.  The "bad" news is that "intuitive awakenings" (whereby we begin to break through the trance-like limitations of our "indoctrination") can be quite painful and disconcerting.  The "good" news is that such struggles bear rich fruit -- in the end, they are our passages into greater levels of awareness and fulfillment.

Accessing the intuition is heavily contingent upon quieting the ego -- that part of us that wants to be "right," to "figure it out," to "prove" it, and to have it all make good, logical sense.  To be clear, I am not suggesting that the ego isn't important or that it doesn't serve a function.  It does.  But a problem arises when it can't surrender to inspiration and guidance of a different sort.

The kind of "inner knowing" or "inner wisdom" that I'm talking about doesn't come from the ego.  It comes from that divine place within.  A lot of us would do well to access this realm more often.  And, fortunately, there are ways in.  Contemplative practices like yoga and/or meditation are wonderful.  Guided imagery, breathwork, and reiki are other vehicles for touching a deeper place.  Even the simple act of sitting still for several minutes a day can be a beneficial tool.

This month, I encourage you to take some time to get to know your deepest Self.  Not the "conditioned" self or the person that you've become in order to "survive," but that part of you that is so much more magnanimous.  This is difficult territory -- it's the terrain of the soul, that eternal aspect of your nature that is here for some greater purpose.  Therefore, tread gently.

Blessings on your journey inward -- may you uncover Greatness!
